After speaking with the child for a few more minutes, my mind is blown. I don’t understand but somehow, I believe her—believe that she thinks what she has revealed to me is reality. I say my goodbyes and allow Detective Hardy to escort me out.

“What’s going on around here? You obviously know my secret.” I cross my arms protectively as I lean against the driver’s side door of my car.

“I’m recruiting you.”

“So, this was what, a test? I don’t understand Mr. Hardy.”

“No. Please, call me Jessie. The kids are missing but I wanted to be sure about you. I need your help with this case. You have a rare ability. You can read the minds of weres. People who can shift into animals.” He dumbs it all down for me. He explains that the kids are missing and that he knows for some reason that I can read the thoughts of the two-natured. He is hoping my ability will lead us to their location.

“So, you’re saying I can hear your thoughts because you change into an animal?” This is crazy, but in a way, it makes sense as to why I can only read certain people. I’m still skeptical.

“When you’re around others you don’t hear anything, correct?”

I nod.

He continues trying to persuade me to become his consultant. “Good. I had a hunch when we first met, I’ve been watching you. This case was my first chance to see if I was right about you. I need you. The force could use your skills.”

“The NSCU?” Is he asking me to work with him, permanently?

“We’re called special for a reason and we have a few rules. Number one, never discuss the force with non-specials. Number two, be prepared for anything. Number three, only kill when necessary.”

Kill? Why would I kill anyone? Is he insane!

“You know things aren’t what they seem.” He pats my shoulder and I brush him off. His touch isn’t warranted.

I sigh and think on his words. He’s right, as strange as it is. I think there are unexplainable affairs. Conditions and situations beyond reason. I do love to help people. All people.

“Any questions?”

“About a million,” I tell him honestly. I have so many. “My husband—was he a shifter?”

“Not sure. Most of us in the area know each other, but that doesn’t mean others go undetected. His case is still ongoing. I’m sorry I don’t have any real answers for you. Could you read his thoughts?”

I shake my head. “Can I, could I see his case file?”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, Delaney. You’ll need to come in and speak to my superior.”

And that’s what I do. I get in my car and follow Jessie to the police station. It isn’t a place I remember fondly after spending hours in interrogation facing a firing squad, hammering me with questions about my husband.

I snort seeing the station is next to a doughnut shop. I never really paid attention the other times I’ve been here for my job.

After parking, I meet him on the sidewalk.
